Description

Digging into my backlog of data a bit -- the Draco Trio!

This view is really cool because you have such different views of galaxies all right next door: nearly-face-on spiral galaxy NGC 5985 on the left, elliptical galaxy NGC 5982 in the center, and edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5981. The three are about 100-150 million lightyears away; they are likely not related to each other, but may be, gravitationally speaking. I couldn't quite pull out most of the center galaxy here, but it's got an extended halo of starstuff, evidence of galactic mergers in the past. NGC 5985, the spiral galaxy on the left, has an active galactic nucleus, spewing all kinds of light across the electromagnetic spectrum.
